The realization of a dream for me on Anzac Day weekend, April 2005. Willing workers came from near and far for an intensive five days to build my house and to learn the Straw Bale technolgy from John and Susan of Huff 'n' Puff Constructions. Miracles prevailed as trouble-shooting, re-coordinating, juggling and shuffling became part of the everyday during the week leading up to the workshop. The Concretors were smoothing the slab by headlights the Friday before the workshop was due to start and I am forever grateful! It seemed like Woodstock (minus the music) was in my front paddock as a whirl of trucks laden with sand, gravel, cement, strawbales, timber and metal rolled up daily. Fine weather prevailed and the Wedge-tailed Eagle soared over regularly to check progress. The project gained momentum and there was no stoppiing it as friends and relatives arrived with cakes, food utensils, wheel barrows, buckets, trowels and even a fire truck (for the water). Workshop participants from Alice Springs, Brisbane, Armidale, Newcastle, Canberra and more locally in Victoria set to work under the excellent tuition of Susan and John. Small teams of people were at work making the window frames, the top and bottom plates and then the walls went up fast. It was a great atmosphere and wonderful to see so many people involved. By day five the second coat of render was nearly completee. How hard people worked and none harder than Susan and John whose professionalism, warmth, generosity and humour were a delight to be around. Marion East |
